Carol Wayne Nude: A Bungalow Shoot in Late Light

The bungalow off Fuller squats low behind a hedge nobody has trimmed in months, and the whole place smells of hot dust and somebody else's cigarettes. It is mid-afternoon, and the light slicing through the slats is the kind photographers beg for and rarely receive: thin gold bars lying across the rug, creeping up the wall a half inch at a time. Carol Wayne Nude steps out of her sandals at the threshold, left then right, no ceremony, and crosses the hardwood barefoot as though the lease were in her name instead of twenty minutes old. She wears a cream silk robe, sash loose at the waist, and every step makes the fabric shift and part and close again — a sliver of hip, a wedge of thigh, then curtain. The photographer is still fussing with his strobes. She does not wait for him. She has a cigarette lit and a story going about a man who once tried to sell her a timeshare out in Palm Springs, and she is laughing at her own punchline with her head tipped back and her throat wide open.

Carol Wayne Nude and the Silk That Hit the Floor

When the strobes finally fire she does not flinch, does not do the little startled hop most girls give you. She simply turns, unhurried, and finds the lens like it owes her money. The sash gives with one tug, and then she shrugs a single shoulder out of the robe and holds there — half in, half out, chin down, eyes up, that lazy dare sitting on her face. Then the other shoulder. The silk slides down her back, drops around her ankles, and she steps out of it and just stands, hands loose at her sides, letting the camera eat her alive. The photographer mutters something under his breath that isn't quite words. She hears it anyway and grins. Here is a body that has been around and knows it — soft where it counts, sharp where it matters — and she wears it the way a certain kind of woman wears a good coat. One arm goes up to the doorframe and the whole line of her draws long and lean, ribs showing, and the shutter starts up like a machine gun and refuses to stop.

Heat Wins, Nobody Argues

Half an hour in, the air conditioner coughs, rattles, and dies. Nobody fixes it. Carol says screw it, and now there is a sheen across her collarbone and a bead of sweat travelling down between her tits, and she doesn't wipe it away, she lets it run, and the lens follows it down as if on a string. She is on the bed now, flat on her stomach, propped on her elbows, feet kicking slowly in the air behind her, drinking warm champagne out of a jelly glass and telling the photographer he has a crooked eye and that she likes it. The sheet gets pulled up over her ass, then dragged down again, then kicked off altogether. She rolls onto her back and stretches and the sweat turns her skin glossy under the lights, like something polished.

Carol Wayne Nude Stops Working and Starts Enjoying It

By now she is posing properly, one knee raised, hand buried in her own hair, and the whole thing has slipped from a job into something she is doing for the fun of it, and you can feel the change in the room the way you feel weather turn. She stops playing to the camera and starts playing with it, teasing the frame, holding a beat too long, dropping her chin, then lifting it again. The photographer stops directing and just shoots. Somewhere behind the strobes the light goes softer and longer and the gold bars crawl higher up the wall, and she follows them with her shoulders, with her spine, turning into the warmth instead of away from it.

What Happened After the Last Frame

On the final roll she has the champagne glass balanced on her belly and she is telling him closer, closer, and he is crouched at the edge of the mattress with his knees cracking and his shirt stuck to his back. Then she sits up, swings her legs over the side, and stays there a moment with her hair in her face, breathing hard, grinning at nothing in particular. The strobes wind down to a whine. Out on the street somebody is mowing a lawn. She reaches for the robe, changes her mind, and leaves it in her lap instead, asking whether there is any of that champagne left. There is. She finishes it in one go, wipes her mouth with the back of her wrist, and says they ought to do this again before the summer is out. Nobody in that room doubts for a second that they will.
