Courtney Henggeler Naked: Inside the Loft Shoot

Courtney Henggeler Naked is not a stiff studio affair. The setting is an empty top-floor loft with factory windows and bare boards, and she arrives in a loose black silk robe with nothing beneath it. The room smells of hot dust and cold coffee. Hard, low sun cuts across the floor in long gold slabs. She drops her bag, steps out of her heels, and stands with her arms loose, as if the lease is in her name. The photographer starts talking about test frames and softboxes. She shrugs him off: natural light, no reflector, camera down until she says otherwise.

He obeys. She walks barefoot over the boards, trails one finger along the window frame, and eases the robe off one shoulder with no hurry at all. The silk gathers at her elbow and stays there. The whole line of her back is visible, the curve of her spine, the place where her tan goes pale near the hip. She glances back at him and smiles as though something has already been settled in her favor. The belt comes undone with two fingers. The robe hits the floor with a slap that sounds absurdly loud in the empty space. She remains in the window light, one hip loaded, chin lifted, letting him look.

There is no rush in the way she holds still. She lets the air from the windows move over her skin and does not cover anything. Her chin stays up. Her shoulders stay loose. When she finally turns toward the glass, the sun slides over her ribs and hip, and the photographer adjusts nothing.

The light does most of the work. It brightens her collarbones, picks out the fine hair on her forearms, and lays a warm band over her chest so one breast is bright and the other falls into shadow. She lifts both hands through her hair, raises it off her neck, holds it a beat too long, then lets it fall. “You gonna shoot or you gonna stare?” He shoots. She moves as if she has done this for years: one knee on the window ledge, elbow on the sill, back arched, then a turn that is part spin and part dance. The shutter begins firing like a jammed sprinkler. The window bores her quickly. She drops to the rug, rolls onto her back, and stretches long and lazy, one arm thrown above her head, knees falling open. The camera takes it. Sweat beads at her temple. She wipes it with the back of her wrist, laughs low and rough, and says the light makes her look like a painting.

She gives the camera a run of quick shapes: shoulder dropped, wrist at the sill, weight shifted, then a long pause with her head tipped back. Dust floats in the slabs of light. She watches it, then looks straight into the lens and holds that look until he lowers the camera for a second.

How the Camera Followed Her

Near the end, nobody bothers calling angles. She is on her stomach, chin on folded arms, feet crossed in the air. The photographer is flat on the floor, shooting up from close enough that the lens almost breathes on her. She presses her hips back into the rug, pulls her palm down her own ribs, and tells him to get the shot of her hand there, right there. He gets it. When the card fills, she does not dress. She rolls over, sits cross-legged and bare on the boards, and asks for the screen. She scrolls back through frame after frame of herself, nodding, sometimes saying “that one” or “delete that one,” entirely calm about being stripped to nothing with the door open. The robe stays where it fell. So does she, for a while.

She takes her time on the screen. She points at a frame and makes him look at the angle of her arm. She names one she likes and one she does not. The door stays open. The room has gone quiet except for the click of the scroll wheel and her breathing.

What the Session Looked Like

The setting was an empty top-floor loft with factory windows, bare floorboards, and a single rug. The light was hard, low sun, with no reflector and no softbox. The wardrobe was a black silk robe and no underwear, gone within the first two minutes. The frames that mattered were the robe caught at the elbow, her hands in her hair, the arch at the sill, and her sprawled across the rug. The mood was hers: she ran the shoot, called the angles, and laughed at the shutter.

Nothing in the room was styled beyond the rug and the light. The boards stayed bare. The robe stayed on the floor after the first few frames.

Courtney Henggeler Naked: Practical Notes From the Loft

For a shoot like this, wear as little as possible and choose something that comes off in one move: a robe, a shirt, a slip. Zips and straps only eat time. To get natural-looking nude shots, skip the softboxes and use hard window light. Keep the model moving and talking so the poses are not held and stiff. A session like this should run ninety minutes at most. Shoot the first twenty fast while nerves are still present, then slow down once she has warmed up and is calling her own shots.

The robe, the open door, and the hard sun are the whole method.
